The international scientific conference held annually by the Faculty of Mass Media Communication UCM in Trnava has become a traditional event attended and supported by renowned media studies theorists and researchers as well as media professionals. The goal of the conference is to present and exchange the current knowledge and experience reflecting media and trends connected to them nowadays (for more details, please see annotations of the individual sections). The lead theme of the conference in 2017 is Media Future.

Deadline for submitting applications and paper annotations: 12th April 2017

Applications, as well as paper annotations are submitted via the electronic application form available at: bit.ly/megatrends2017. In case you encounter any trouble filling and submitting the electronic application form or we can be of any other assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Conference fee

  • 200 € – conference paper in English (these papers will be either published in conference proceedings, which are to be submitted for evaluation to prestigious international citation databases Web of Science, Scopus, ERIH PLUS, EBSCO, or offered to foreign academic journal indexed in Scopus database); in case of co-authorship, each co-author pays conference fee 80,- €, whether attending the conference or not,
  • 100 € – conference papers submitted in Slovak, Czech, Polish or other languages or conference papers submitted in different languages (published in standard double-blind peer reviewed conference proceedings); in the case of co-authorship, each co-author pays conference fee 60,- €, whether attending the conference or not.

The conference fee covers rent of premises, printing conference materials and publication of reviewed conference proceedings, refreshment and evening banquet. Please note that the fee is paid only cash, during the registration procedures at the conference. In case this form of payment does not suit you, do not hesitate to contact us via the conference e-mail. Please note that the fee does not cover the costs for lunch and accommodation.

  • 25th April 2017 – lunch = 10 €
  • 26th April 2017 – lunch = 10 €

Please note that fees for lunch are paid only cash, during the registration procedures at the conference. Lunch is optional; expressing your interest in having lunch is a part of the electronic application form. Other snacks and drinks served during the conference – including banquet dinner – are free of charge.

Programme change: Dear participants, please note, that due the absence of several guests of our panel discussion this will be replaced by the open discussion focused on the main topic (Media Future). The debate will be run by facilitators.

Smolenice Castle: 1 person = 35 €/1 night (Accomodation in a single room costs 50 €/night)

1. Future of Media Terminology

DISCUSSION TOPICS

  • language of modern media discourse,
  • media discourse and approaches to its study,
  • lexical means of consciousness manipulation in modern mass media,
  • lexicon of specific discourse (social media discourse, political media discourse, gender aspect of Internet discourse, legal media discourse, etc.),
  • lexicon of journalism of analytical and emotional type,
  • vocabulary of specific journalistic messages (editorial, column, article, feuilleton, reportage, etc.),
  • lexicon of soft news and hard news,
  • types of terms and their function in media discourse,
  • neologisms related to media entertainment – infotainment, edutainment and other hybrid expressions aiming to specify new spheres of media production,
  • the issue of genre hybridisation – television genres in the 21st century,
  • “terminological chaos” in the context of today’s media culture (new phenomena of production and reception of media culture and their problematic theoretical determination),
  • adaptation of foreign (Anglo-Saxon, French, Spanish, German, etc.) language lexicon in Slovak journalism and media practice,
  • specific communication trends in online and digital environment – new types of entertainment, new expressions to understand,
  • development of terminological axis of media studies and its perspectives,
  • contemporary theoretical, methodological and paradigmatic problems associated with research on communication practices,
  • translation in terms of reflection on media communication,
  • reflection of media culture in the context of language culture cultivation (critical reflection on globalisation and glocalisation influences),
  • the issue of translating foreign (scholarly as well as artistic) literature into Slovak language,
  • hybridisation and typological “confusion” in contemporary journalistic genres,
  • terms “mainstream” and “alternative” and their explication in scientific discourse,
  • transformation of language of advertisements with emphasis on specific expectations and preferences of different (age-related and other) categories of recipients,
  • blurred boundaries between promoting goods and making news – PR contents versus news articles.

2. Future of Media Education

  • significance of development of critical thinking in post-truth society,
  • possibilities of media education in relation with identification and explanation of media propaganda,
  • extremist and hateful contents on the Internet and how to work with them in terms of media education,
  • alternative media in the context of development of media and information literacy,
  • decreasing interest of audiences in mainstream media; media education and its place in explaining reasons and consequences of this phenomenon,
  • social media and their influence on dissemination of hoaxes and disinformation,
  • media education of children and adolescents – current trends in curriculum and methodology,

  • new ways and attitudes towards development of media and information literacy in the era of social media,

  • “big data” and their use in terms of making marketing communication more effective; ethical and legal issues related to its collection,
  • marketing automatization, CRM, automatized e-mails, behavioural marketing and advanced personalisation of web and its content,
  • increasing return of investments, optimisation of web pages and communication in social media aiming to increase profit,
  • social CRM and customer care in the era of social media,
  • marketing communication via “snaps”, mediated experiences and other innovations of social media,
  • segmentation and identification of target market in media; target group and its influence on programme structure, multi-channel strategy of media and premium media content,
  • commercial use of advertising space in media, advertising capacities related to various media; television and the Internet – key media in terms of buying advertising space,
  • selling advertising space in media, media convergence related to advertising space, “silver economy” and its influence on media production and advertising content, concentration of media ownership, media groups in Slovakia, media owners and their activities associated with marketing and marketing communication in media.

5. Future of Games

  • development of the fields of game studies and digital games theory – problems and perspectives,
  • “butterfly effect” and other innovations related to design of game narratives,
  • 3D-scan as a tool for personalisation of avatars and maximization of game immersion,
  • use of virtual reality in contemporary game industry and its potential in other industrial segments,
  • augmented reality, geolocation and other trends in mobile gaming,
  • cloud gaming as a basis for gaming-on-demand services,
  • multiscreen gaming and compatibility of gaming devices,
  • “metaverse” and the future of social networks,
  • gamification as a trend in digital design in terms of various aspects of everyday life,
  • use of serious games in the processes of education, electronic sports and new trends in game marketing.

Please send your papers in English, Slovak, Czech or other language (max. 20 standard pages) including abstracts, key words (abstract and key words must be submitted in two language versions – mother language and English), illustrations, charts and bibliography in text editor MS Word by the date mentioned above at the latest to the e-mail address: megatrends-media@fmk.sk.

  • Alignment: justified
  • Spacing: 1
  • All margins: top and bottom 2,5 cm, right and left 2 cm
  • Chart description: above the chart, including the reference
  • Illustration description: under the illustration, including the reference
  • Bibliographic references or notes: please use numbered footnotes on the relevant page in accordance with citation rules.

Content arrangement of the paper

  • Title of the paper in English (14 pt, bold, CAPITAL letters, align centre)
  • Name and surname of the author/authors (14 pt, italics, align centre)
  • Abstract in English – max. 15 lines
  • Key words in English – max. 10 words
  • Titles of the chapters (14 pt, bold)
  • Text of the paper
  • List of references – according to FMMC´s citation rules
  • Contact details – name(s) of the author/authors with full academic degrees, name and address of the affiliated organisation, e-mail(s) of the author/authors (align left).

In case the contributions meet the given requirements, the received papers will be published in peer-reviewed conference proceedings. All texts as submitted must be original, so-far-unpublished (please see the Editorial Policy tab).

Conference outputs:

  • Selected papers written and submitted in English will be published in the scientific journal European Journal of Science and Theology (EJST) which is indexed in the Scopus database. The journal’s editorial board (in cooperation with the scientific committee of the conference) will perform selection of the best texts that are also relevant to EJST´s scope and scholarly orientation. The selected works will be published by the end of 2017.
  • Conference proceedings in English submitted for evaluation to databases Web of Science, Scopus, ERIH PLUS, EBSCO (please note that the selected texts have to meet all requirements related to academic texts in English; the highest quality of professional translation is required).
  • Conference proceedings that include papers submitted by authors who wish to publish their conference contributions in Slovak, Czech, Polish or any other language than English.

Important notice:
We would like to inform the conference participants that all annotations of conference papers will be assessed by the scientific committee of the conference. Please note that the annotations have to match scientific, linguistic, stylistic and ethical criteria related to publishing academic texts of this kind.

„Megatrends and Media“ are scientific peer reviewed conference proceedings published annu­ally by the Faculty of Mass Media Communication at UCM in Trnava. The proceedings are dedicated to present the most significant theoretical, research and professional contributions to the international scientific conference “Megatrends and Media” in order to provide the selected pa­pers with wider scientific and professional recognition.
